Senior Electrochemist / Aptamer Scientist
Be part of a high-performance, interdisciplinary and experienced team, committed to tackle significant healthcare challenges.
WearOptimo™ (www.wearoptimo.com) is a Brisbane (Australia) biotechnology ‘skunkworks’ led by Prof. Mark Kendall, with the mission of developing wearable healthcare sensors to have big clinical outcomes. Our minimally invasive and pain-free devices are applied to the skin, accessing key signals and information in the body.
We have assembled an exceptional and high-performing interdisciplinary team to execute on our vision of transforming healthcare through on person and real time monitoring and diagnostics. The WearOptimo™ team comes from around the world, with expertise in technology, science and commercialising technology. We are united in our passion and commitment to help tackle important healthcare challenges with practical solutions.
Our R&D and commercial teams work hard and occasionally to tight deadlines to achieve the performance goals that allow us to progress towards our milestones. In return it is well-rewarded with a vibrant and exciting workplace culture where your contribution to all aspects of our enterprise is acknowledged and celebrated. WearOptimo™ has an excellent social scene (administered by our own social club) featuring regular informal beers and BBQ's on the deck, monthly lunches and team-building activities in and out of the office.
We are continuing to grow WearOptimo™’s exceptional R&D team with this new role:
Senior Electrochemical Scientist
As the senior electrochemical scientist you will play a leading role developing aptamer-based wearable biosensors to tackle some of healthcare’s biggest challenges for improved health outcomes. This will be through empowering patients and clinicians with continuous monitoring of body signals and bioanalyte parameters rapidly, and on the person.
We seek applicants who can find practical and innovative solutions to technical challenges in a fast-paced enterprise/start-up environment. We are looking for an electrochemical “Swiss Army Knife”, a senior scientist who knows their stuff and who can work with our highly multidisciplinary and technically diverse team. You will be lending your chemical/electrochemical/aptamer skillset to novel challenges, some of which may be outside of your immediate area of expertise.
If the idea of working at WearOptimo™ is of interest, and you think you would be an excellent fit with this role, then we look forward to receiving your application.
Collaborating closely with our physicists, chemists, and engineers in our R&D team you will be a electrochemical authority in WearOptimo™ and you will work to shape a sensing device that is optimised for human biology, but is also practical and manufacturable.
We are looking for a team player, who will take an active role in idea generation and provide valuable input (from a sensing chemistry perspective) into cross-disciplinary group discussions. You need to have an open mind and an agile working approach. This is a ‘roll your sleeves up’ kind of position for technology in the earliest stages of development, providing a unique opportunity to have a big impact on a new, exciting product that has the potential to change healthcare for the better.
Qualifications and Experience:
As our senior electrochemical scientist, you will have a leading role in the development of our aptamer-based wearable biosensor devices. You will use your expertise in aptamer systems and in experimental design to structure programmes of work to evaluate WearOptimo™’s devices, primarily focusing on their preclinical evaluation using in vitro and in vivo preclinical models. Prior work with skin tissues (animal and/or human) would be a significant advantage, and prior work with electrochemical aptamer-based biosensors is essential.
Experience of R&D in commercial enterprises, and/or translating technologies out of an academic setting into a commercial environment would be a distinct advantage.
You will work primarily in our fully equipped on-site laboratory in Brisbane, and you will be flexible to travel to work occasionally within the facilities of our R&D partners in line with our social isolation requirements.
A PhD in a science discipline (chemistry, electrochemistry, physics etc.), or an undergraduate degree with a comparable level of industry experience.
A minimum 4 years’ experience of aptamer sensing chemistry working within a hands-on R&D environment in academia or industry. Experience of electrochemical aptamer-based biosensors and the multiple facets of aptamer technology, including aptamer screening, sensor functionalisation, analysis of sensitivity and specificity, and optimisation.
A strong background in developing novel biochemical assays.
An understanding of OH&S issues relating to working in a chemistry or PC2 laboratory and good laboratory practice.
Excellent experimental design and analytical skills, excellent personal organisational skills.
A sufficient grasp of quality, risk management, regulatory and clinical considerations to guide sensor development at an early stage.
Self-motivation, aptitude for problem-solving, and multi-tasking ability
The ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team environment
Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated initiative, motivation, and flexibility.
You share with us an entrepreneurial spirit with enthusiasm and vision about converting cutting-edge science into impactful commercial applications.
The ability to find pragmatic innovative solutions to technical challenges in a fast-paced start-up environment, with limited resources and time, is a must.
Prior work with skin tissues (animal or human).
Prior experience in conducting research on rodent animal models and in-vivo human trials.
Salary AUD$97,199 to AUD$124,537 (+ 9.5% super) depending upon experience.
